Professional Disposition
There are many things I strive for in my profession but first and foremost I do it for my students to have every chance to succeed. All students regardless of disabilities need the chance to succeed in a general education setting in the least restrictive environment. To this point in my teaching career I have tried to give my all the resources possible to help my students become successful even to the point of removing myself from a classroom to become a students one-on-one. My students needs have always outweighed those of my own and it is something that will never change no matter how far I go in my career.
From my self-assessment it definitely shows that I am for the needs of my students but still struggle with meeting those same needs of my colleagues. I struggle in the area of showing empathy and being a good listener towards colleagues since I seem to hold them to higher standards than my students. Currently I struggle with expecting teachers to know how to do their job seamlessly without judgment that leaves me having very little empathy for them. What I have tried to learn is that not all teachers are equal and not all have the same teaching styles. Observing so many other teachers through the last year I have had more personal connections and understand what teachers may go through sometimes. Lastly I will try to listen more rather than having a quick reply back on how to fix a problem or give my opinion.
Personal Teaching Philosophy
Professional Development Plan
Complete the chart below to plan your professional development over the next 2-3 years. Be sure your goals are specific and measureable.
Goal #1: To become gifted endorsed.
Goal #2: Taking and passing my special education certificate.
Goal #3: Begin and complete my masters program.
| |
Rationale: Why did you choose this goal? How do you expect it to improve the outcomes of your future students?
The reason behind getting my gifted endorsement is the opportunities it will give me to help students should I get a teaching position at my current school, which is a STEM school. Working with gifted students will allow me to use the skills I learn to promote a higher level of thinking but in a creative way.
Should the time ever come for me to have special needs students in my classroom I would want to be certified to go along with my 8 years of being a paraprofessional in the special education setting. Also in the future should a position open up in special education management I would like to have it on my resume.
First and foremost I want to further my education and move up to a management position one day to make important changes in the classroom. Through a masters program I would like to see how I could improve in my classroom as well to offer as much as possible to my students.
End Date: By when do you expect to accomplish this goal?
I plan to accomplish and completing this course by May 2020 through my school district.
I plan to accomplish this sometime during the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year.
I plan to accomplish this at the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
Action Timeline:What steps will you take to complete this goal, and by when will you take them? Example:
1/31/18: Join AACTE
7/1/19: Register for Gifted endorsement
8/3/19: Begin Gifted endorsement courses
5/10/20: Complete Gifted endorsement course
9/15/20: Register for the Special Education Gace exam.
9/20-10/20: Study for the exam at least 30 minutes a night.
11/7/20: Take Gace exam
8/20/20: Register for my masters program.
1/7/21: Begin masters program
5/31/22: Complete masters program
Resources: What resources are available to assist you in accomplishing your goal?
First I plan to talk to other colleagues and my administration about what I need to know about the course or what to expect. I also plan to ask my wife for her notebook to get ideas for upcoming assignments.
There are pre-tests and study guides that I plan to look over so I can prepare for anything that might come up on the tests. Some of my fellow colleagues have recently taken the same exam so I plan on asking them for tips that I could study for on the exam.
One major thing I want to make sure to do is not allow too much time to pass between courses. I know myself and if 2 or 3 years goes by then it will be that much harder to stay focused on what I need to do for school. When I get my class schedule I plan to find time everyday even if its only 30 minutes to get work done.
